Using Web 2.0

Much has been made in tech circles of Web 2.0, the acceleration of the web with more input from users. Think Wikipedia, Threadless, YouTube, FlickR, MySpace, or the millions of online product reviews that you can access (and may contribute to) online. So are nonprofits using this giant leap forward?

The answer is yes, at least according to Social Computing Magazine, in an article entitled Non-Profits Now 'Get' Web 2.0 and Social Media, Say Experts

I was really pleased to see this level of information, and it synchs with what I've been seeing in organizations that have younger staff who are pushing more online interaction. It's fast, its reasonably inexpensive, and, best of all.....it works.

And, if you're interested in starting a smaller social networking group around your mission---check out Ning. It's fast, easy and free!

I would love to share a new tool with your readers. BigString is a free email service that allows a user to easily send, recall, erase, self-destruct and modify an email after it has been sent. BigString users have unprecedented control over all of their email, whether they choose to send it through the BigString.com website or even Microsoft Outlook.

It is inevitable. At one point or another in your life, you’ve sent an email to a colleague, client, family member or significant other that’s been highly regrettable. Even before pressing send, you knew it was a bad idea, yet you rolled the dice and clicked anyway, only to cringe at what you wrote later on.

for all of you out there that think that bigstring.com for your cool new "take that back, non provable email" is just the ticket for the consumers control of their words, you have forgotten one important (and probably the more important part) of this whole idea.
that is... if you can do it so can everyone else.

where better to have a home base for those that dont want to take responsibility for what they say/do?

i found my email at bigstring completely full of emails from some ass wipe group(?) that sends porn links. hows that for privacy and control?

i have to admit that i dont know 'jack' compared to the majority of you that use a computer. in fact, i wouldnt challenge a 10 year old on a computer where computer literacy is concerned, but i think i have enough common sense to know that if i have been given a priveledge like recallable, no trace types of freedom, then everyone else on the planet is also given the same.

i personally have seen how this can all turn on you.

i will be deleting my account. it isnt safe from perverts, creeps and other unwanted individuals.
in fact, watch out for emails from ebay because it appears as though these people with the porn have gotten a list off of ebay of email addresses in which to send these porn links thru/to.

i admitted that im not signifigantly educated in the whole cyber world but i dont think that you have to have a third eye to see where this is taking things.

to quote Dr. Phil....those that have nothing to hide...hide nothing. that being said, this email service is probably crawling with do badders that have alot to hide.

i watched the newsclip on ABC News about bigstring.com, they did a poor job of reporting the story (in my opinion) because no one bothered to see the down side of this kind of thing.

they made it all sound like the people that would use this kind of thing are those that want to make an adjustment on an email that they sent, just to keep from embarrassing themselves.

the best example that they could come up with is someone sending another a person a dinner date/time and having to change it so rather than to send a second email to the recipient, you would just change the email to save themself some embarrassment.

come on, that isnt right! how many times would 'embarrassment' be the reason for changing your words?

if you have to make your dinner arrangements over the internet, rather than by using your handy cell phone, or in person, then you are probably not worth the time it takes to read an email anyway. this system is going to widen the path for liars, even bigger.
i think there are enough of those kinds of people as it is.

maybe i need to drop ABC NEWS a note as well. i am bothered that they were so impressed with the whole idea. especially since they are in the business of supposidly reporting the news.
